1649 - Teams backup completes with warning “Unable to backup archived Teams”

Modified on Mon, 9 Mar at 12:47 PM

Symptom

A Teams backup completes with the following warning:

Unable to backup archived Teams. Please unarchive '[team name]' to enable future backups.

Cause

To enable us to backup and restore Microsoft 365 data, we make use of the Microsoft Graph API. Due to Microsoft Graph API restrictions, archived Teams are not currently supported for backup and recovery. If a team has been archived, our system is unable to access the data to perform a backup, which results in the abovementioned error.

Solution

To backup an archived team, you will need to un-archive it and run a backup, then re-archive the team. The archived team will then be available for recovery.

Because there is no activity in an archived team, it will not need to be backed up again, and you can ignore future occurrences of the same warning.
