Symptom
Backups on an existing account fail with an invalid certificate error. The backup logs may show a failed SSL handshake.
Cause
There are three possible causes for this type of failure.
- Certificate problem: The target server's certificate has expired, is self-signed, or is from an untrusted source.
- Hostname mismatch: The name on the target server's certificate does not match the name used by the specific ESE agent.
- Proxy interference: A proxy server is interrupting the connection.
Solution
To resolve the issue, do the following:
1. Verify the certificate details
Access the target server directly in a web browser and check the certificate's issuer, hostname, and validity period. If the origin of the certificate is not Redstor, you may have a certificate issue and further investigation is recommended. The certificate should appear as follows (shown here in Google Chrome):
2. Investigate the proxy
If a proxy is involved, disable it temporarily and check if the connection is successful. If disabling the proxy fixes the issue, investigate its certificate configuration, or whitelist the target server's certificates as specified in the Redstor Network Requirements.
