586 - ESE Agent inclusion/exclusion hierarchy

Modified on Tue, 5 Aug at 1:11 PM

Users and Administrators can include or exclude (by profiling) certain files and/folders for backup.

The following table shows the order in which inclusions or exclusions take precedence (1 being the most important, 7 the least):

OrderSourcePurposeExample
1Built-in exclusion

Specified by:
a) Operating system
b) Data Management Agent

(Cannot be changed)

  • Files set in the Windows registry
  • SE and DL installation folders.
  • ESE's ProgramData/Data and ProgramData/tasks folders

2Feature exclusion

Determined by the feature in the Agent - for ESE only.

(Cannot be changed)

  • MS SQL database files
  • Windows Image Backup files
3Feature inclusion
4Profiled exclusion

Set in SP Console

*.mp3
My Music
C:\Windows

5Profiled inclusion

Filter example:
*.docx
Specification example:

6Agent exclusion

(Set by user)

*.jpg
My Videos
C:\Data
C:\Folder\*.mp3

7Agent inclusion

Filters and direct inclusions

(Set by user)

C:\Users\john\Documents
C:\Folder\*.doc

Notes:

  • An exclusion always takes precedence over an inclusion from the same source.
  • Only these exclusions and inclusions can be changed:
    • those set in the Console through Profiling (levels 4 and 5 by Administrator only)
    • those set in the Agent (levels 6 and 7)
