1641 - Best practice for backing up network share data

Modified on Thu, 22 Jan at 7:08 AM

If you need to backup network share data, follow the guidelines below for optimal functionality.

  • Multiple shares are supported.
  • To ensure that backups can complete in a timely manner, do not exceed:
    • 5 million files per network share
    • 10 million files per backup account protecting network share data
  • The ESE client is compatible with the SMB3 protocol. We can backup cloud-based SMB data sources that support this protocol, such as Azure file share.
  • If using cloud file shares:
    • Data will be scanned regularly, so using cloud “pay per transaction” storage is not recommended.
    • We recommended running the ESE agent on a virtual machine in the cloud, within the same region, and if possible to use a private network endpoint. This will minimise latency in communicating with the file share.
    • Data transmitted may be seen as egress data and incur bandwidth charges with the cloud provider.
