In April 2025, Microsoft announced that they are actively working to remove Exchange Web Services (EWS) dependencies in all Microsoft products, including Outlook, Office, and Teams. As such, some users of Redstor backup are seeing warnings such as the following in the Microsoft message centre:
| In October 2026 we will begin disabling EWS on all M365 tenants worldwide. EWS Applications that have not been migrated will stop functioning. |
We would like to reassure all Redstor customers that we are prepared for this change, and we do not foresee a substantial impact on backup and recovery.
As background, our system uses both the Microsoft EWS API and the Microsoft Graph API for our Exchange backup and recovery product. Microsoft intends to retire the EWS API in favour of the Graph API, which will require them to add significant functionality to the Graph API during the next year. In preparation for the deprecation of the EWS API, we are increasing our adoption of the Graph API as Microsoft adds the necessary functionality to it. Our system will be fully migrated to the Graph API before the EWS API is switched off.
