Server Edition (SE) and Desktop & Laptop Edition (DL) clients are legacy clients that are only supported "as is". The current version of SE/DL is version 18.10, and there are no plans for any further releases, as these would only be for operating systems that are no longer supported.
On newer operating systems (Windows 2008/Windows 7 and onwards), the creation of new SE/DL accounts is prohibited. On legacy operating systems, SE/DL should only be installed where no alternative? is available.
SE/DL clients can be converted to ESE for most operating systems. Detailed information about conversion can be found in Article 903 - Converting Accounts from SE/DL to ESE. For instances where this is not supported, please log a support ticket.
The future of legacy clients
SE/DL clients use a proprietary non-HTTPS protocol that connects to the same port as the currently supported clients (ESE and SaaS). We intend to separate this functionality in future and ultimately to deprecate it when SE/DL support is terminated.
When client separation is enforced, self-hosted storage customers with SE/DL clients will be required to either:
- provide additional StorageServer instances for these clients to back up to, or
- migrate the backup accounts to dedicated, Redstor-hosted legacy client StorageServers.
Customers will be informed well in advance when the timescales for enforced client separation have been confirmed.
