1380 - Redstor Platform data sovereignty and regional functionality

Introduction

Redstor's Storage Platform is designed to accommodate data sovereignty and regional functionality. Regional functionality is split into processing and storage, with the functionality operating independently but with mappings between relevant regions.

This article explains how data sovereignty and regional functionality work with regard to Redstor's Platform. Data processing information for specific services can be found here:

General processing regions

Redstor processing regions are used to present either terminating connections for application services (i.e. the RedAPI) or for post-backup processing features (e.g. malware detection). This is geographically separated to ensure optimal performance and maintain data sovereignty.

Our general processing regions are as follows:

• European Union – Frankfurt am Main
• South Africa – Johannesburg
• Switzerland – Zurich
• United Kingdom – London
• United States – Virginia

For post-backup processing, Redstor's storage regions are mapped to processing regions as follows:

• Australia > United Kingdom
• Czechia > European Union
• Germany > European Union
• Hong Kong > United Kingdom
• Middle East & Africa > South Africa
• Netherlands > European Union
• Switzerland > Switzerland
• United Kingdom > United Kingdom
• United States > United States

Storage regions

Redstor operates storage infrastructure in the following regions:

• Australia – New South Wales & Victoria
• East Asia – Hong Kong
• Germany – Berlin & Frankfurt*
• South Africa – Cape Town & Johannesburg
• United Kingdom – Reading, Slough, Hoddesdon & Gloucester
• United States – Arizona, Virginia

*Note: Data from Germany stored in Germany by default. Other EU data is stored in the UK by default, but can be stored in Germany if requested. If you would like to request this, please contact Support.

All stored data is replicated to a secondary copy within the same geographic region but, where possible, a different metropolitan area (e.g. data protected in Australia is kept in New South Wales and replicated to Victoria).

Some approved partners have self-hosted storage that is connected to the Redstor Platform, and may be hosted in other geographic locations.

The processing-to-storage mapping of these regions (where applicable) is shown under General processing regions above.

To enable you to see the storage region for a particular machine in your backups, we have added a Storage region column to the All Machines page in the RedApp.
