Hard disk space and configuration

Required (StorageServer):
- Thick provisioning
Recommended (StorageServer):

- 7200RPM SATA as a minimum
- Minimum of 10 GB of available disk space for the installation volumes (more required if non-default log and reporting retention is used)
- Volumes to a maximum of 120 TB, depending on the data type and user distribution on the server
- No more than 2000 backup accounts per StorageServer volume
- NTFS should use allocation unit size (cluster size) of 64K or greater

Note:
- ReFS is not supported
- SMR (shingled magnetic recording) drives are not recommended due to poor write performance

Optimal: 3GB per 1 million files in the backup selection
Hard disk space and configuration Required: 150 MB plus space for local cache
Recommended: Amount of free space equal to the backup account limit.
Cache: The local cache can be as large as the total size of all files selected for backup; a file selection of 100 MB needs up to 100 MB extra disk space for the cache (not required when streaming is enabled).
Required: 150 MB plus space for local cache
Recommended: Amount of free space equal to the backup account limit
Cache: The local cache can be as large as thetotal size of all files selected for backup. A file selection of 10 GB needs up to 10 GB free space for the cache (not required when streaming is enabled).
Database backup: Space is needed for the data dump and cache. The dump can be as large as the database. The cache is the compressed version of the database. For example: 1:2 compression ratio on a 10 GB database requires 15 GB of free space (10 GB for the dump and 5 GB for the cache). Temporary working space is also required for subsequent backups. The requirement will be less than 5 GB in this example.

Out-of-support operating systems

ESE has in the past been supported on the operating systems listed below that are now no longer actively supported by the OS vendor. The compatibility of previous ESE releases was verified on these OSs, but the latest ESE versions are no longer being verified. Support for ESE on these OSs is best effort, relating to known issues; any issues relating to the operating system cannot be supported, as the operating system is not supported.

  • Windows 7 (end of mainstream support: 13 January 2015)
  • Windows 8.1 (end of mainstream support: 9 January 2018)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (end of mainstream support: 13 January 2015)
  • Windows Server 2012 and R2 (end of mainstream support: 9 October 2018)

Support for these operating systems may be explicitly withdrawn in future, and any known limitations or maximum compatibility versions will be listed here.

Also note:

  • ESE is non-functional on Windows Server 2008 (including variants such as SBS)/Windows Vista and older.
  • InstantData Permanent is non-functional on Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7 and older.

Using out-of-support operating systems is not recommended. Your best option to protect your data with ESE is to use an operating system that is in active support by the vendor.

Out-of-support Redstor versions

  • Support cannot be assured for legacy clients (SE/DL). These clients can be used on legacy operating systems, but they are no longer being supported for security patches.
  • Redstor software older than v16 has not been supported since 1 March 2018.
  • Support for v5 and earlier of the Attix5 Pro Backup Client ended on 31 March 2013. End-of-life was reached with version 17.2 (February 2017). All end-of-life Backup Clients are blocked in v17.2 and later.
  • Support for v6.2.4 ended on 1 June 2013.
